Gene Vincent - Biography + album preview

Like so many of his contemporaries in rock 'n' roll, the young Gene Vincent served an apprenticeship amidst a poor community in the deep South, integrating his country music roots with the rhythms of R&B. Vincent Eugene Craddock, born February 11, 1935, showed his first real interest in music while his family lived in Munden Point, VA, near the North Carolina line where they ran an old country store. Gene acquired his first guitar at the age of 12 when he was visiting a friend in West Virginia who had a guitar-playing sister. This buddy gave Gene the guitar and told him to keep it, a gesture that baffled Gene, not knowing if the gift was out of fate or just a friend trying to get rid of the sister's practicing sounds. Passers-by would sit on the porch as a teenage Vincent played the blues, gospel and country tunes of the day. His father (Ezekiah Jackson Craddock) and mother (Mary Louise) eventually gave up the store and moved back to Norfolk, VA. Gene dropped out of school to serve in the military. In February of 1952 he joined the US Navy, but would never see any military action. Three years later during a July weekend, while still in the navy, Gene had an accident while riding his brand new Triumph motorcycle. A woman in a Chrysler ran a red light, hit Gene and put him into the naval hospital with a severely smashed left leg. By all accounts Gene's doctors were considering amputation but he begged his mother not to allow the operation. He was released from the navy and was to spend the rest of 1955 in and out of the hospital. His leg remained severely damaged and steel brace was attached. The navy may have lost a sailor, but the world gained a rock 'n' roll legend. In September 1955 Gene was well enough to attend and see Hank Snow's All Star Jamboree in Norfolk, VA, brought into the town by the local country radio station WCMS, the hottest station in town. This show featured country stars: Cowboy Copas, the Louvin Brothers and Jimmy Rogers as well as a young hillbilly cat from Tupelo, Mississippi, Elvis Presley. At that time Gene was 5' 9" tall, weighed 150 pounds (he gained weight in the late 60's), had dark curly hair, brown eyes, enjoyed swimming, was an avid football fan and his favorite food was a cheeseburger.

By early 1956, his leg still in plaster, Gene began hanging around this radio station occasionally singing with the staff band, The Virginians. He regularly appeared on WCMS's Country Showtime program and would perform a song called "Be Bop A Lula."  Here's three versions of how "Be Bop A Lula" came to be. The song was supposedly based on a comic strip heroine called Little Lulu and Gene said he co-wrote it with fellow hospital patient Donald Graves. Then Sheriff Tex Davis, a local DJ, saw some potential in Gene and the weird song he sang and decided cut himself into the writing credits by buying Graves' rights to it for a mere $25. But, another story ignores Donald Graves completely and claims Gene and Sheriff Tex wrote the song together one afternoon while listening to a 78-prm recording of "You Can Bring Pearl with the Turn-Up Nose, But Don't Bring Lulu." A third version has Graves writing the song entirely on his own and selling to Gene for $50. The real story still remains in question. It is a fact, though, that Sherriff Tex Davis did sign a bewildered Gene Vincent to a management deal and later did co-write songs with Gene. Out of the Virginians a new band was created for Gene featuring "Galloping" Cliff Gallup on lead guitar, "Wee" Willie Williams on rhythm guitar, "Jumpin'" Jack Neal on upright string bass and 15 year-old Dickie "Be-Bop" Harrell on drums. Gallup, at the ripe old age of 26, was the group's elder statesman steeped in the traditions of country music and mainstream jazz (influenced strongly by Charlie Christian). Cliff smoothly rocked his Gretsch Black Duo Jet single cutaway guitar, with studio added echo, into a frenzy. His guitar work played a big part in Gene Vincent's early success. Gallup's lead licks on Gene's first recordings have become the "bible" for hundreds of rock 'n roll guitarists ever since. Sheriff Tex had met top Capitol producer, Ken Nelson, at a DJ. convention in Nashville and became aware of Capitol's desire to sign their own rival to Elvis Presley who had now left Sun Records to join RCA. Tex took Gene and his band into WCMS studios on April 9, 1956 where they recorded "Be-Bop-A-Lula", "Race With The Devil" and the country ballad "I Sure Miss You." After sending demos of these songs to Ken Nelson at Capitol it was a long three weeks before Nelson contacted Tex Davis (because Capitol also had over 200 other audition demo tapes to review from would-be rockers) with the message to get Gene Vincent and his band to Nashville for a May 4th recording session at Owen Bradley's studio. Upon being summoned to Nashville, Gene quickly gathered the guys together, only to find themselves fogged in at the Norfolk airport. They were upset about possibility missing the scheduled recording date, so they turned their troubles into song. They hauled out their instruments and had the airport rockin' within minutes. The fog lifted, and when the first available west bound plane arrived, five passengers give up their seats so the boys could make it to Nashville in time for the session.

Sun Records History

Sam C. Phillips was from Florence, Alabama. He had ambitions to be a lawyer, but had to drop out of high school to support his aunt and widowed mother. He became a disc jockey in 1942 at WLAY in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. After a series of jobs on other radio stations, he ended up on WREC in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1946. He was also promoting events at the Hotel Peabody in Memphis, and by 1950 had enough money to start a company to record local events and do custom recording. The company he formed was called Memphis Recording Service, with a small recording studio at 706 Union Avenue in Memphis. He developed contacts with Saul and Jules Bihari who owned Modern Records in Los Angeles and Sam's first recording was of Phineas Newborn, a jazz pianist, for them in June 1950. A disc jockey on WHBQ named Dewey Phillips (no relation to Sam) came to Sam with the proposal to form a record label to record the many blues singers in and around Memphis. Dewey Phillips would run the label and Sam Phillips would record the music. The name of the record label was "It's The Phillips" The first and only record issued was It's The Phillips 9001/2, "Boogie in the Park"/"Gotta Let You Go" by Joe Hill Louis in August 1950. The record was unsuccessful, and Sam Phillips subsequently negotiated a contract with Modern Records for Joe Hill Louis recordings. Phillips continued working for Modern Records, cutting sessions for B.B. King, Rosco Gordon and Walter Horton. In 1951, he also started an association with the Chess Brothers in Chicago. After recording Howlin' Wolf and Jackie Brenston, he offered to lease the masters to Chess. Modern Records was upset that Phillips had given Chess the first option on Brenston and Wolf recordings and after that used virtually nothing from the Memphis Recording service. Jackie Brenston was a saxophone player in Ike Turner's Kings of Rhythm band. Ike Turner had come to the Memphis Recording Service to record an automobile song he and the band had developed called "Rocket 88". Sam Phillips leased the song to Chess records, where it was issued under the name "Jackie Brenston and His Delta Cats." It became one of the biggest R&B hits of 1951.  -- continue

MODERN ROCK 'N' ROLL & ROCKABILLY
BIG BAD SHAKIN' : KING CD : £9.99 + p&p
Hard pounding greasy Rock 'n' Roll - this second Big Bad Shakin' album is a much more diverse and produced selection than on their straight Rock'n'Roll debut release "Bad At Being Good".  Here they show that they have got what it takes to appeal to music fans outside of the hardcore Rock'n'Roll scene, but it's certainly still rockin' and the greasers will dig it too!
BILL CRITTENDEN AND THE SWEET GEORGIA BOYS : HARD LUCK BABY CD : £8.99 + p&p
Melodic stripped down Rockabilly with great vocals.  Uptempo rockin' rhythms from a red-hot rockin' trio featuring Mick Wigfall on upright bass and Malcolm Chapman on guitar.  If you dig The Bellfuries and Go Cat Go, Paul Ansell and High Noon, then this one is for you!  Lots of great original songs, along with a handful of excellent covers.  Great stuff!
THE HONEYBEES : HIVE JIVE CD : £10.99 + p&p
Dual female vocals singing a mix of Rockabilly, Rock'n'Roll and Jump Blues.  The Honey Bees are primarily known for the tight vocal harmonies of Barbara Clifford and Rachel Decker.  The band's influences range from Rockabilly and Roots legends including Wanda Jackson, Janis Martin, Brenda Lee, Chuck Berry, and Ricky Nelson to modern artists such as Rosie Flores and The Paladins.
THE HUSTLERS : FRAUDMINDED CD : £8.99 + p&p
Here's a rockin' scene band with something different to offer.  Lots of top-notch original material, and well chosen cover-versions re-worked into their own style.  Fabulous blues-tinged Rockabilly Bop, and you'll also find hints of 80s Rockabilly favourites like The Wigsville Spliffs & The Bootleggers in with the 50s influences.  A great release which offers a fresh take on 50s rockin' music.
MISCHIEF! HOT WHEELS CD : £10.99 + p&p
One of the finest Rockabilly bands in Europe, Mischeif! have built up a huge fanbase through playing the rockin' clubs and the major festivals like Rockabilly Rave and High Rockabilly.  More than half the songs on "Hot Wheels" are Mischief originals, but they also deliver some strong renditions of a handful of 50s Rockabilly Classics (Gene Vincent, Rusty & Doug Kershaw etc).  There's no doubt that this will be a popular release which which reinforce their status as one of the Rockin' scene's top names.
COLIN PAUL AND THE PERSUADERS : ALL FIRED UP CD : £8.99 + p&p
Elvis Presley inspired Rock 'n' Roll from Colin Paul & The Persuaders.  One of the UK Rock 'n' Roll Club scene's top names, Colin Paul is one of the country's most respected Elvis style vocalists.  As well as songs associated with the King, they also deliver solid covers of Billy Fury, Fats Domino and Larry Williams.
THE REPTILES : ROCKABILLY RAMPAGE CD : £8.99 + p&p
Greasy Rebel Rockabilly that stomps and shakes with a big influence from the Rockabilly Revival bands of the late 70s & early 80s.  All original material - a great release from a solid rockin' band.
RESTLESS : KICKIN' INTO MIDNIGHT CD : £8.99 + p&p
Legends of modern-day Rockabilly, Restless, led by guitar-ace Mark Harman, have released a string of magnificent albums since the 1980s.  "Kickin' Into Midnight" is among the best, and is a real fan-favourite.  It has been out-of-print for several years since the Madhouse label ceased.  This overdue re-issue sees it smartly dressed in a digi-pack jacket, with the addition of the much sought-after live album "Live & Kicking" included as bonus tracks.
RHYTHM TRAIN : BAD TO THE BONE CD : £9.99 + p&p
Countryfied Rockabilly in the tradition of BR5-49, Two Tons Of Steel etc.  Rhythm Train are a versatile 4-piece whose repertoire ranges from vintage style Hillbilly to all-out Rockabilly, and what's more they play original material rather than relying on the classic songs of the original era.  Texas Rockabilly Queen Marti Brom makes a guest appearance.
ARSEN ROULETTE : TANGLED WEB CD-EP : £4.99 + p&p
CD-EP with 4 sensational studio tracks from Rockabilly Cat Arsen Roulette, delevered with urgent vocals and a guitar so powerful that sound like it with strung with telegraph wires!  All original material, and Carl "Sonny" Leyland makes a guest appearance.

THE TOP CATS : ROCKABILLY TRASH CD : £8.99 + p&p
Second album of hard-hitting slap-bass Rockabilly from The Topcats.  They serve up a sizzling Rockabilly cover of The Rolling Stones "Paint It Black", as well as covering the artists that influenced them - The Stray Cats, Eddie Cochran, Johnny Kidd and Vince Taylor.

PSYCHOBILLY & GARAGE PUNK
THE BOPPIN' KIDS : ULTIMATE WORST OF THE BOPPIN' KIDS CD : £10.99 + p&p
One of the best slap-bass Neo-Rockabilly bands of the 1980s - the Boppin' Kids were young, energetic, powerful and furious - as this "Best Of" collection of original 80s recordings displays.  Frantic and Wild stuff that will appeal to fans of Old-School Psychobilly and 80s Neo-Rockabilly.  Recommended!
THE FLESHTONES : LIVE AT THE HURRAH CLUB DVD : £10.99 + p&p
First ever DVD release from the legendary Garage Rockers - filmed live on stage over two shows in New York City.
FRANCINE : ONE STEP FURTHER CD : £10.99 + p&p
From their Neo-Rockabilly beginnings, Francine have transformed their sound into a hard-rockin' Punkabilly style which comebines Rockabilly, Punk Rock, Rock, Ska, Pop and more - but always stays catchy and melodic.  Their following extends way beyond the Rockabilly scene these days, but they still retain the rockin' rhythms and upright bass, as well as the quiffed contingent of their fanbase.  "One Step Further" is another fine Francine album, packed with great songs which mix and match the musical genres that influence them.
THE METEORS : THE KINGS OF PSYCHOBILLY - 5 CD Boxed Set : £27.99 + p&p
5-disc career spanning retrospective of the undisputed Kings of Psychobilly, The Meteors.  Led by virtuoso guitar and Psychobilly godfather P.Paul Fenech, The Meteors have been going for near on 30 years. They have spawned generations of imitators, and an entire genre, but still no one has ever bettered them.  This collection picks all the highlights from their noteworthy career, right up to their most recent albums.
TORMENT : ROUND THE WORLD CD : £9.99 + p&p
Torment formed in 1985, the band name was found on a track from the classic 12" "Robot Riot" EP, a recording from Simon Brand's days with Frenzy.  Torment offers an alternative route through the world of Psychobilly, avoiding lyrical & musical stereotypes.  Their unique sound, individuality and forward looking attitude turned the band into one of the most interesting best bands that emerged from the 1980s Psychobilly revolution.
WHISKEY DAREDEVILS : THE VERY BEST OF THE WHISKEY DAREDEVILS CD : £10.99 + p&p
Are the Whiskey Daredevils the best Country Punkabilly band in the world?  Probably, but maybe that's  because they might be the only band on the planet to combine the energy of Punk Rock, the raw twang of American Country Music, crazed Rockabilly rhythms and the attitude of classic 60s Garage Punk.  If you loved their previous outfit The Cowslingers, the you're sure to dig The Whiskey Dare-Devils!

ROCK 'N' ROLL GREATS!
EDDIE COCHRAN : SINGING TO MY BABY CD : £3.99 + p&p
CD release of Eddie Cochran's original "Singin' To My Baby" album which was originally released in 1957, eventually becoming a UK hit in 1960 following his tragic death.  It was a hit again when reissued in 1963.
BUDDY HOLLY / RITCHIE VALENS / THE BIG BOPPER : WINTER DANCE PARTY - 50th ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL CD : £10.99 + p&p
A magnificent 27 track collection released to mark the 50th anniversary of the darkest day in Rock'n'Roll history.  On February 3rd 1959 Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper were killed in a plane crash whilst on their Winter Dance Party tour.  This collection presents some of the legendary artists' greatest recordings, and also includes recordings which were made to promote the tour.
LITTLE RICHARD : HERE'S LITTLE RICHARD CD : £3.99 + p&p
Little Richard scored six big hits in 1956, success which prompted Specialty Records to gather together the best of the singles and build an album around them. The result was "Here's Little Richard" originally released in July 1957.  Even now, more than fifty years later and after a career spanning five decades "Here's Little Richard" remains his most important and vital album, and is still the best selling album of his career.
BOB LUMAN : RED HOT 1956-'57 CD + DVD : £14.99 + p&p
Bob Luman began his career under the spell of Elvis and was among the first wave of local rockabillies to create his own brand of Texas "Cat Music". Nekromantix - Biography + first album preview

The story of the Nekromantix began back in 1989 ; the band was founded by Kim Nekroman, who just had left the Royal Danish Navy after 8 years in the submarines. After two local danish shows, the band appeared on a big festival in Hamburg, Germany, only six month after their first rehearsal session. This resulted in a record deal for the first Nekromantix release Hellbound. By that time the psychobilly scene was mainly dominated by british bands, and world-wide psycho fans welcomed the Nekromantix new and different psychobilly style. The music is best described in terms like "Elvis meets the Wolfman", add punk attitude and spice it up with a universe of monster movies lyrics. Outrageous wildness on stage plus their trademark, the hardcore-slapping coffin shaped upright bass, the guys have proved that it is allowed to have fun. After heavy touring all over Europe the Nekromantix released Curse of the Coffin in 1991. The same titled low budget video was shown several times on MTV's "Alternative Nation". This classic album was to become an influence for new bands for the years to come. The follow-up album Brought back to Life, in 1994, resulted in the only psychobilly band ever being nominated for a Grammy Award, followed by a tour in Japan. It is considered by many as their masterpiece and as a perfect album.

The fourth album, the critically acclaimed Demons are a Girl's Best Friend, was released in 1996 and the Nekromantix appeared in the news on Danish national TV, followed by several European festival appearances and tours. Their fifth real album was the awaited live album, Undead Live, which includes all on stage favorite tunes. As it was said by Kaptain Zorch, "they obviously care about their music, and go to great pains to reproduce their recorded sound live on stage".  The sixth album, name here, was produced and released in the USA, with still the same philosophy than the others. Why the USA ? It is still a great mystery, but some have their own idea about it. A kind of "successful career achievement" parody, or maybe just not to do like the Stray Cats... Unless it was just a good deal for them, who knows ? Even the band doesn't !

Despite the fact that all their albums has been low budget recordings released on small independent labels and that absolutely no money was spent for promoting, the Nekromantix have achieved world-wide acceptance and been touring Japan, USA, Great Britain, Germany, Finland, Holland, Belgium, Sweden, France, Spain and Denmark.

The Blasters - Biography + live

The all-American roots music band, the Blasters were principally brothers Dave and Phil Alvin whose first-hand experience with blues masters shaped their sound and turned them both into contemporary singer/songwriters whose interest in roots rock has never waned. The brothers, along with Bill Bateman on drums and John Bazz on bass, grew up in Downey California, in the shadow of Disneyland. Their musical education involved hanging out with musicians like Lee Allen, Marcus Johnson, and T-Bone Walker, all of whom tipped the band to the ways of blues and R&B. Ironically, by the time they were ready to work in Los Angeles clubs, the punk rock explosion was in full swing, and they found an audience for their rough-and-ready sound among the punks, particularly fans of X with whom they frequently shared the bill. American Music (1980) was a collection of roots covers and like-minded originals. Followed by The Blasters (1981, Slash), the band had added veteran pianist Gene Taylor, baritone saxophonist Steve Berlin and mentor Allen on tenor sax. Amazingly, the album reached number 36 on the charts. In 1982, they recorded the live EP, Over There for Slash, followed by 1983's Non-Fiction. Less focused on rockabilly revivalism, Dave Alvin had become the band's chief cook and songwriter. Berlin had since left the fold to join Los Lobos. Hard Line in 1985 was even more polished and featured the work of Ry Cooder and John Mellencamp; the latter's song "Colored Lights" was written and produced by him especially with the band in mind. The band called it a day after that, though several years later Phil Alvin reformed the group as a live act without Dave. After joining X for a brief spell, Dave launched a career as a prolific solo recording artist; Phil released one solo album before heading back to school to pursue post-graduate work in mathematics. Taylor is also a solo recording artist. In spring 2002 the original Blasters lineup -- the Dave and Phil Alvin, Bazz, Bateman, and Taylor -- reunited for a series of six reunions shows in California. A live album resulted, Trouble Bound, which featured recordings from the group's two performances at House of Blues in Hollywood. Another round of reunion shows produced a second live set, The Blasters Live: Going Home, and a home video of the same show was released concurrently. With the group back in the public eye, in 2005 Phil Alvin's edition of the Blasters - featuring Phil, John Bazz on bass, Keith Wyatt on guitar and Jerry Angel on drums - finally released a long-promised studio album, 4-11-44.

Happy Birthday KING!

Elvis Presley January 8, 1935 (Tupelo) - August 16, 1977 (Graceland)

Elvis Aaron Presley, in the humblest of circumstances, was born to Vernon and Gladys Presley in a two-room house in Tupelo, Mississippi on January 8, 1935. His twin brother, Jessie Garon, was stillborn, leaving Elvis to grow up as an only child. He and his parents moved to Memphis, Tennessee in 1948, and Elvis graduated from Humes High School there in 1953.

Biography Elvis’ musical influences were the pop and country music of the time, the gospel music he heard in church and at the all-night gospel sings he frequently attended, and the black R&B he absorbed on historic Beale Street as a Memphis teenager. In 1954, he began his singing career with the legendary Sun Records label in Memphis. In late 1955, his recording contract was sold to RCA Victor. By 1956, he was an international sensation. With a sound and style that uniquely combined his diverse musical influences and blurred and challenged the social and racial barriers of the time, he ushered in a whole new era of American music and popular culture.

He starred in 33 successful films, made history with his television appearances and specials, and knew great acclaim through his many, often record-breaking, live concert performances on tour and in Las Vegas. Globally, he has sold over one billion records, more than any other artist. His American sales have earned him gold, platinum or multi-platinum awards for 150 different albums and singles, far more than any other artist. Among his many awards and accolades were 14 Grammy nominations (3 wins) from the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, which he received at age 36, and his being named One of the Ten Outstanding Young Men of the Nation for 1970 by the United States Jaycees. Without any of the special privileges his celebrity status might have afforded him, he honorably served his country in the U.S. Army.

His talent, good looks, sensuality, charisma, and good humor endeared him to millions, as did the humility and human kindness he demonstrated throughout his life. Known the world over by his first name, he is regarded as one of the most important figures of twentieth century popular culture. Elvis died at his Memphis home, Graceland, on August 16, 1977.

The Cramps - Songs The Cramps Taught Us vol 01

Short biography:

In the spring of 1976, The CRAMPS began to fester in a NYC apartment. Without fresh air or natural light, the group developed its uniquely mutant strain of rock’n’roll aided only by the sickly blue rays of late night TV. While the jackhammer rhythms of punk were proliferating in NYC, The CRAMPS dove into the deepest recesses of the rock’n’roll psyche for the most primal of all rhythmic impulses -- rockabilly -- the sound of   southern culture falling apart in a blaze of shudders and hiccups.  As late night sci-fi reruns colored the room, The CRAMPS also picked and chose amongst the psychotic debris of previous rock eras - instrumental rock, surf, psychedelia, and sixties punk. And then they added the junkiest element of all -- themselves.
 — J. H. Sasfy, Professor of Rockology, from the liner notes of The Cramps 1979 release Gravest Hits

It would be almost impossible to have never heard of The CRAMPS. Their career has been the stuff of legend.  Dangerously bizarre but most of all cool, The CRAMPS represent everything that is truly reprehensible about rock’n’roll.  Founding members Lux Interior (the psycho-sexual Elvis/Werewolf hybrid from hell) and guitar-slinging soul-mate Poison Ivy (the ultimate bad girl vixen) are the architects of a wicked sound that distills a cross of swamp water, moonshine and nitro down to a dangerous and unstable musical substance. Their cultural impact has spawned a legion of devil cults and dance-floor catfights, and created in its wake a cavalcade of cave-stomping imitators. As punk rock pioneers in the late seventies, they cut their teeth on the stages of CBGB and Max’s Kansas City and recorded their first record at Sam Phillips legendary Sun Studios, funded mainly by Ivy’s income as a dominatrix in NYC. They coined the now popular term “psychobilly” on their 1976 gig posters. Their hair-raising live performances are still a total, no-holds-barred rock’n’roll assault. After a quarter century of mayhem, they’re too far gone to even consider any other course.

The current line-up still features long-time Cramps drummer Harry Drumdini, plus new blood Sean Yseult sittin’ in on bass.

The Stray Cats Biography

Formed Long Island, New York, 1979; disbanded, 1984; reformed several times since.
If Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran and Carl Perkins engaged in a drunken mènage à trois and produced a musical offspring, the Stray Cats would be it. Formed in Long Island, New York during the late 70s, the band consisted of three high school friends. With Brian Setzer on guitar, Slim Jim Phantom (born James McDonnell) on drums and Lee Rocker (born Lee Drucher) on standup bass, the Stray Cats plowed some of the same fertile ground as their influences. The unit's sound was not some reanimated zombie from the '50s, though. There was a punk/new wave insurrection happening in New York at the time.

The Stray Cats threw this into the mix and the resultant voodoo stew of neo-rockabilly was distilled into pure pop. The trio soon relocated to the United Kingdom, where pre-Buddy Holly rock n roll has never quite gone out of style. Some well received gigs brought them quick notoriety. Soon they were taken under Dave Edmund's wing. Roots rocker Edmunds would produce much of their subsequent work. In 1981 they released their debut album Stray Cats in Britian. Dusting off some rockabilly chestnuts and brewing up a batch of strong originals, the Stray Cats served notice that they delivered the real McCoy. Slim Jim Phantom and Lee Rocker were an adequate rhythm section, but Brian Setzer's crackling guitar was defenitely the focus. Further, Setzer was capable of conjuring every rockabilly vocal trick in the book, from hiccups to growls.

The Stray Cats soon issued another LP of classy songs and they returned to their homeland to crack the all-important American market, gaining exposure by opening for the Rolling Stones on their "Tattoo You" tour. The trio also appeared on the American television show, Fridays.

Finally in 1982, the trio released their first album in the States, Built For Speed. Taking the best tracks off their two British LPs, the album sold well. It garnered additional attention from its two hit singles, "Rock This Town" and "Stray Cat Strut." Both songs were made into videos for airtime on the fledgling MTV video station. This ploy helped the album make a solid dent in the American charts. Built For Speed was rounded out by a dead-on Eddie Cochran cover, "Jeanie, Jeanie, Jeanie" and the menacing "Rumble In Brighton."

In 1983, the Stray Cats delivered another strong original "(She's) Sexy And 17" as a single. Hot on the heels of the 45's success, they released Rant N' Rave. The album contained the trio's best song "How Long You Wanna Live, Anyway?" Another album cut, "I Won't Stand In Your Way" was subsequently released as a single. The novelty of '50s rock n roll was wearing thin, however and by the end of 1984, the Stray Cats were no more. Setzer went on to a lukewarm solo career while Slim Jim Phantom and Lee Rocker trudged onwards with their own band. The Stray Cats have reformed several times since. None of their subsequent albums have captured the enthusiasm of the early recordings, though. In the 90s, Setzer has achieved some success by fronting a big band, the Brian Setzer Orchestra, which has cashed in on the swing craze.

RUNAWAY BOYS: A RETROSPECTIVE '81-92 (1997; EMI) This is the one and only pit stop a hot rod rockabilly fan need make. Containing their hit singles, strong albums cuts and a few rarities, this compilation is essential. The only quibble is the failure to include their best song, the ferocious "How Long You Wanna Live, Anyway?"

In 2008 they make Farewell Tour which was sold out anywhere. For 2009 Farewell tour continue in Australia and shows are already sold out as well.
