Hard To Find Jukebox Classics 1956 - VA (2007)

Hard To Find Jukebox Classics 1956 - VA (2007)

With so many labels and so many CD's, you'd think it would be easy to find all the top hits from the fabulous 50's. Not so! To remedy this musical misfortune, Hit Parade Records inaugurates their new year-by-year CD series with Hard To Find Jukebox Classics 1956. This exciting, audiophile-quality disc is bulging with 24 classic pop, vocal group, folk, and early rock 'n' roll hits. All these platters made the Top 40 - sixteen hit the Top 10, three made it all the way to #1 - but just try and find these terrific songs today! Hard To Find Jukebox Classics 1956 includes eight songs never available on CD till now, including Fess Parker's "Wringle Wrangle" (#12), Dorothy Collins' "My Boy - Flat Top" (#15), and the stereo single version of Morris Stoloff's #1 smash, "Moonglow & Theme from 'Picnic'." Others, like the Cheers' tragicomic "Black Denim Trousers" (featuring Bert Convey) or Tony Bennett's rapturous "Can You Find It In Your Heart " are very difficult - if not impossible - to find on CD these days.

Tracks:
01. The Green Door - Jim Lowe (#1 - 9/56)
02. Black Denim Trousers - The Cheers (Rare on CD) (#6 - 9/55)
03. The House of Blue Lights - Chuck Miller (Rare on CD) (#9 - 6/55)
04. Moonlight Gambler - Frankie Laine (#3 - 12/56)
05. In a Shanty in Old Shanty Town (Single Version) - Somethin' Smith & Redheads (CD Debut) (#27 - 6/56)
06. It's a Sin to Tell a Lie - Somethin' Smith & Redheads (Rare on CD) (#7 - 4/55)
07. City of Angels - The Highlights (CD Debut in USA) (#19 - 10/56)
08. It's Almost Tomorrow - The Dream Weavers (Rare on CD) (#7 - 11/55)
09. True Love (STEREO) - Bing Crosby & Grace Kelly (Rare on CD) (#3 - 9/56)
10. On the Street Where You Live - Vic Damone (#4 - 4/56)
11. Two Different Worlds - Don Rondo (Rare on CD) (#11 - 10/56)
12. From the Candy Store On the Corner to the Chapel On the Hill - Tony Bennett (CD Debut) (#11 - 8/56)
13. Can You Find It in Your Heart - Tony Bennett (Rare on CD) (#16 - 4/56)
14. Rock-a-Bye Your Baby with a Dixie Melody - Jerry Lewis (Rare on CD) (#10 - 11/56)
15. Moonglow & Theme from 'Picnic' (Stereo Single Version) - Morris Stoloff & His Orchestra (CD Debut) (#1 - 4/56)
16. Tonight You Belong to Me - Patience & Prudence (#4 - 8/56)
17. I Dreamed - Betty Johnson (Rare on CD) (#9 - 11/56)
18. White Silver Sands - The Owen Bradley Quintet (CD Debut) (#18 - 7/57)
19. Cinco Robles (Five Oaks) - Russell Arms (CD Debut) (#22 - 12/56)
20. Cindy, Oh Cindy - Vince Martin featuring The Tarriers (Rare on CD) (#9 - 10/56)
21. Wringle Wrangle - Fess Parker (CD Debut) (#12 - 12/56)
22. Rock Island Line - Lonnie Donegan & His Skiffle Group (#8 - 3/56)
23. My Boy - Flat Top - Dorothy Collins (CD Debut) (#16 - 11/55)
24. Rock and Roll Waltz - Kay Starr (#1 - 1/56)

Hats off to our friends at Canada's Hit Parade records. They have come up with real winner here!! "Hard to Find Jukebox Classics 1956" features two dozen of the most pleasing pop tunes from that era. And many of these songs are appearing on CD for the very first time! In all cases these are the original hit recordings you would remember from the radio. No disappointing re-recordings on this one! Even though I have been a collector for more than 40 years there were still 7 or 8 songs on this disc that I did not own!! For me, this collection was a real find.
"Hard to Find Jukebox Classics 1956" features hits by some of the premiere vocalists in American popular music. Enjoy once again Vic Damone's splendid recording of "On The Street Where You Live" from "My Fair Lady". That one always sends chills up and down my spine! One of the big hits of 1956 was Bing Crosby's duet with Grace Kelly. "True Love", featured in the motion picture "High Society", went all the way to #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the fall of that year. I was also extremely pleased to find a pair of hits by Tony Bennett that have been out-of-print and virtually impossible to find for decades. "Can You Find It In Your Heart" and "From The Candy Store On The Corner To The Chapel On The Hill" were both big sellers that year. If you enjoy that rockabilly sound then Chuck Miller's Top Ten smash "The House of Blue Lights" will certainly float your boat. And fans of group harmony will appreciate tunes like Somethin' Smith and the Redheads recording of "It's A Sin To Tell A Lie" or the Highlights "City Of Angels". For me, perhaps the biggest surprise in this collection was the remarkable Jerry Lewis recording (yes, that Jerry Lewis)of Al Jolson's 1918 hit "Rock-A-Bye Your Baby With A Dixie Melody". I cannot imagine that Lewis was much of a singer, but his voice proved to be perfect for that song. While I have always been aware that this tune hit the Top Ten back in '56 I had never heard the song before nor had I ever seen the 45 rpm record.
I could go on and on but suffice to say that if this is your kind of music then you should grab this one immediately. It has been my experience that collections like this tend to have a fairly short shelf life so if you procrastinate you may miss out. Simply stated, this disc is a joy to listen to. Very highly recommended!!!
Amazon customer Comment

Mods, I realize the bitrate's a bit low on this one, but they're recordings from 50 years ago, and some of them are rare, and even previously unreleased on CD, so I hope you'll be willing to bend the rules on this one, and allow it to be published. After all, jukeboxes in 1956 didn't have perfect sound quality!

Buddy Knox was the first artist of the rock & roll era to write and record his own number one hit, a pioneer of the Lone Star State rockabilly sound that would later earn the name "Tex-Mex," the arc of his career anticipated that of fellow Texan Buddy Holly, yet while Holly is now enshrined in the pantheon of rock's true immortals, Knox's contributions remain sadly underappreciated. Jerry Lee Lewis – The Many Sides Of Jerry Lee Lewis (Comp. 2006) (2-CD)

The Many Sides Of Jerry Lee Lewis is a 2-CD collection, covering his magnificent return to the top of his career and his signing to Mercury Records. This 40 track collection features some of his most experimental work in a successful recording period when he emerged as pure, unrefined Jerry Lee Lewis, 75% inspiration, 25% ego, 100% magnificent.

Jerry Lee Lewis (born September 29, 1935 in Ferriday, Louisiana, U.S.) is an American rock and roll and country music singer, songwriter, and pianist, as well as an early pioneer of rock and roll music. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986 and his pioneering contribution to the genre has been recognized by the rockabilly Hall of Fame. His nickname is The Killer.

Like Elvis Presley, he was raised singing the Christian gospel music of integrated southern Pentecostal churches. In 1950 he attended Southwestern Bible Institute in Texas but was expelled for misconduct, including playing rock and roll versions of hymns in church. Pearry Green (then president of the student body) related how during a talent show Jerry played some worldly music. The next morning the Dean of the school called both Jerry and Pearry into his office to expel them both. Jerry then said that Pearry shouldn’t be expelled because “he didn’t know what I was going to do.” Years later Pearry asked Jerry: “Are you still playing the devil’s music?” Jerry replied, “Yes, I am. But you know it’s strange, the same music that they kicked me out of school for is the same kind of music they play in their churches today. The difference is, I know I am playing for the devil and they don’t.”

Leaving religious music behind, he became a part of the burgeoning new rock and roll sound, cutting his first record in 1954. Two years later, at Sun Records studio in Memphis, Tennessee, producer and engineer Jack Clement discovered and recorded Lewis for the Sun label, while owner Sam Phillips was away on a trip to Florida. As a result, Lewis joined Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, Carl Perkins, and Johnny Cash as stars who began their recording careers at Sun Studios around this same time.

Lewis’ first recording at Sun studios was his own distinct version of the country ballad Crazy Arms. In 1957, his piano and the pure rock and roll sound of Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On propelled him to international fame. Great Balls Of Fire soon followed, and would become his biggest hit. Watching and listening to Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis said if he could play the piano like that, he’d quit singing. Lewis’ early billing was Jerry Lee Lewis and his Pumping Piano.

Lewis was a pioneer of piano rock, not only through his sound by also through his dynamic performance. He would often kick the piano bench out of the way to play standing, rake his hands up and down the keyboard for dramatic accent, and even sit down on it. His frenetic performance style can be seen in films such as High School Confidential (he sang the title song from the back of a flatbed truck), and Jamboree.
These performance techniques have been adopted by recent piano rock artists, notably admirer Elton John. Jerry Lee is still around (2007) and recently recorded an album called ‘Last Man Standing’ with a host of todays top recording stars.

12 Step Rebels - Go Go Graveyard Rockin'

12 Step Rebels graduated from the same school of psychobilly as fellow American wreckers Tiger Army and The Quakes. With "Go Go Graveyard Rockin’" the 12 Step Rebels have been let loose on the psychobilly world, and are out to prove that you don't have to be from Europe to rock the upright bass. Blasting out a fury of punk and rockabilly, the band tears through each track with ferocious adrenaline that never crosses over to the hardcore side of things. Drawing upon influences from all forms of Americana music and blended with a dark, ominous style, 12 Step Rebels create an identifiable and powerful sound ranging from the dreary, melodic Ballad of Frankenstein's Monster to the 50's-style boogie Graveyard Rockin' or the punk-influenced anthem Rebel Rock.

Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis & Carl Perkins – The Survivors - Recorded Live In Stuttgart, Germany (1981)

This recording was taped live in Stuttgart in 1981 and was co-produced by Cash's future son in law, Rodney Crowell. This set is special in that it brought three of the original Sun Record stars together at about the same time that the mysterious "million dollar quartet" recordings were beginning to surface. The listener will be grabbed in particular when Lewis weighs in with Whole Lotta Shakin', then the trio and the backup band, Cash's band with W.S.Holland (Perkin's original drummer) and Lewis's sideman, Ken Lovelace cook on some southern gospel standards. Lewis contributes several inspired piano solos and backs up Perkins' vocals in a way that makes him (Perkins) reach back for more.
This disc shows why Cash was, and still is pure country and why Perkins and Lewis could straddle the fence between Country and Rock'n Roll. This recording also lets us hear what might of been had someone had the foresight to capture these greats earlier, say in the early seventies. But better late than never, and that has resulted in this magnificent and very enjoyable album !!

Chuck Berry - The Definitive Collection (2005) Re-upload

Chuck Berry - The Definitive Collection
mp3 CBR 320 | 77:29 min | 169 MB

There have been many, many Chuck Berry compilations released by Chess over the years, but as of the spring of 2006, there was no comprehensive single-disc set in print; there was the double-disc 2005 set Gold, which itself was a retitled reissue of 2000's Anthology, but the classic comp The Great Twenty-Eight was long out of print, and nothing had replaced it until the 2006 release of The Definitive Collection. This generous 30-track selection offers nearly everything that was on The Great Twenty-Eight and in nearly the same sequence -- "Brown Eyed Handsome Man" and "Roll Over Beethoven" are swapped, for instance, but it's not really a noticeable change. "Bye Bye Johnny" is the only song missing from The Great Twenty-Eight, which is not a huge omission, especially since it's been replaced with two great singles, "You Never Can Tell" and "Promised Land." "My Ding-A-Ling" is also here and, while it is a worse song than "Bye Bye Johnny", it was Chuck's only number one single, so its inclusion makes sense -- and it hardly sinks a collection that is by far the best, most comprehensive single-disc Chuck Berry set yet assembled. Sure, there are some great Berry songs that are absent, but all the major songs are here; plus, if you need more than 30 songs, turn to either Gold or The Chess Box. If you want a single-disc best-of collection of all of Chuck's finest, this is the one to get.

Roy Kelton Orbison (April 23, 1936 – December 6, 1988) was an American singer-songwriter and musician, well known for his distinctive, powerful voice, complex compositions, and dark emotional ballads. Orbison grew up in Texas and began singing in a rockabilly / country & western band in high school until he was signed by Sun Records in Memphis. His greatest success was with Monument Records in the early 1960s where 22 of his songs placed on the Top Forty, including "Only the Lonely", "Crying", "In Dreams", and "Oh, Pretty Woman". His career stagnated through the 1970s, but several covers of his songs and the use of one in a film by David Lynch revived his career in the 1980s. He joined the supergroup The Traveling Wilburys with George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and Jeff Lynne and released an album in 1988. He died of a heart attack at the age of 52, at the zenith of his resurgence.

Orbison was a natural baritone, but since 1961 writers have speculated that he had a three or four-octave range. The combination of Orbison's powerful, impassioned voice, and the complex musical arrangements in his songs led many in rock and roll to refer to his music as operatic, calling him the "Caruso of Rock". Performers as disparate as Elvis Presley and Bono stated his voice was, respectively, the greatest and most distinctive they had ever heard. While most men in rock and roll in the 1950s and 1960s portrayed a defiant masculinity, many of Orbison's songs instead conveyed a quiet, desperate vulnerability. He experienced tragedies in his life including the death of his first wife and his children on separate occasions. He was known for performing while standing still and solitary, wearing black clothes and dark sunglasses which lent an air of mystery to his persona.

Orbison was initiated into the second class of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987 by longtime admirer Bruce Springsteen. The same year he was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. Rolling Stone listed Orbison as No. 37 in their list of The Greatest Artists of All Time. In 2002, Billboard magazine listed Orbison at No. 74 in the Top 600 recording artists. Rolling Stone rated Orbison at No. 13 in their list of The 100 Greatest Singers of All Time in 2008.

Johnny Cash & Willie Nelson – VH1 Storytellers (1998)

Johnny Cash & Willie Nelson – VH1 Storytellers (1998)
American Recordings | 1998 | Country | FLAC+CUE+HQ-Covers (400Dpi) | NO LOG | 329Mb+2Mb

When VH1 did their storytellers series (similar to MTV Unplugged), they had Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson just get together and play. This CD is over 10 years old, but it seems as fresh as today. Willie and Johnny show their friendship. It seems an unplanned set with two old friends. They seem to be glib and having a good time playing their music and telling stories. For the hour of play time this CD has, Johnny Cash is still alive and playing. This is how we should rememember Johnny and Willie..laughing and having a good time !!

VA Rock Around The EEC vol 01

From The "United States Of Europe" :

If you are looking for Rock'n'Roll or Rockabilly music, Europe is the place to be nowadays. Of course it all started way back in the fifties in the USA with the likes of Elvis Presley, Bill Haley, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran and Buddy Holly, but today there is much more Rock'n'Roll on the Old Continent. That has everything to do with the fact that Europe is getting more and more united. Well, economically and politically that doesn't always work out for the best yet, but for Rock'n'Roll it's a blessing. Trading records and visiting festivals has become a lot easier and when the Berlin Wall came down in 1989 there were whole new areas to explore for both East and West. Last year a new record label named "Empire Records" started off as a cooperation between Rock'n'Roll enthusiasts from different countries, and it can therefor be called the first European label, with offices in Finland, Spain, Netherlands and The United Kingdom. They took on the challenge of releasing a collection of Rock'n'Roll and Rockabilly music from each and every country in Europe. At this point, that goal hasn't been reached yet, but as you may have noticed, this album is titled "Rock Around the EEC, Volume 1". Volume 2 is therefor inevitable, the quest for more great rockin' music goes on even when you are reading this.

What's already on this volume is not just a gathering of homebrew records, it's the cream of the crops. Starring some of the greatest European bands from today like Li'l Esther & The Tin Stars, Spo-Dee-O-Dee, Ronnie Nightingale & The Haydocks, The Firebirds, Fireball Steven, Go!DaddyO, Marco Di Maggio, Mad Men, Mystery Gang Trio and many many more. Bands that have earned great respect over the years touring, not only in their own country, but many parts of Europe too, gathering extatic crowds on all the international festivals like Hemsby (U.K.), Screamin' Festival (Spain), Rumburk Rumble (Czech Republic), Rock'n'Roll Jamboree (Finland), Brandenburger Meeting (Germany), Teddy Boy Fest (Holland), the list is endless. Politics in Europe may be slow, but the cats and kittens are rockin' real fast, so let's make our continent a United Rockin' Europe, starting with this album "Rock Around the EEC". Enjoy!
